Whittling Logs into Serving Trays

Matthew 7:3-5 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

We all are prone to logs in the eyes, in fact some of us may have whole forests and not even know it! It is so much easier to “see” someone else’s faults. We tend to compare ourselves to others in order to know how well we are doing. There are momentary good feelings when we determine we aren’t as bad as others. In our imagination we believe that God’s judgement is based upon the “average” grade of all His children. If there are others who do worse, than we aren’t in as much danger of failing to meet His requirements. We become hypocrites when it comes to judging because we pretend to be the gold standard.

The problem?

Isaiah 55:8-9 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

This form of competitive grading is a human invention. And I will agree that a lot of parents employ this competitive method among siblings. But our value should never be attached to a system that is based upon yours or anyone else’s actions.

I understand the need to assess the quality of tasks and actions but the comparison of people to each other adds subjective conclusions too easily made with bias. Unfortunately this subjective judgement pretends to be done without malice but lacks any awareness of the danger it introduces to the participants. The only thing it ultimately accomplishes is division and wounding.  What we “intend” as encouragement to do our best can scar and blind people from seeking &/or believing in what is best.

God’s love is unconditional. Based entirely on His choice to love you, the one whom He created.

Psalm 139:14-18 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand.

God’s judgement is based on His perfect knowledge of His creation.

We don’t have the qualities or qualifications to judge so let’s take any and all logs out of our eyes before ministering to others.

As humans we are prone to logs, but if you cannot distinguish those in your eyes let me just suggest a few examples.

You may have a log in your eye if…

You start all conversations with your assessment of how things are &/or should be.

You see the potential sin in every action.

You point out dangerous characteristics that need to be changed.

Perfection is the standard and nothing else is good enough.

You are the chief “whistle-blower” in your congregation.

You quote Scripture with a tone that depicts our Abba as an uncaring, rigid, unforgiving task master.

Identify your log… But let’s not stop at identifying and taking the logs out, let’s use the logs to whittle them into our serving tray.

Start whittling!

Ephesians 4:15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,

When you approach Scripture in your own life, let the Holy Spirit teach, apply and cause it to produce God’s fruit. It will not return void.

Speaking… How does Abba speak to you? The Truth… Not your version of truth but God’s (If you need help with this part please don’t hesitate to seek solid counsel.)… In love… God IS love so we need to love like He does!

Ephesians 4:29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear… study and store up words that edify!

Ephesians 5:19-20 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father… Keep a song in your heart and sing at the top of your lungs!

Instead of standing in our preferred position of slave foreman, let’s assume the position of laborer in the field so that we may join in the celebration of the harvest.

Let’s fill our trays and serve… Let’s fill them with Christ!

Jesus says, John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Luke 2:10-11 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

Let’s fill our trays with abundant life and good news!

Let’s make beautiful serving trays… let’s become an artist of trays!

We must change our approach to our own life. We must stop comparing ourselves and others and we must focus our minds (and hearts and souls) on God so that we might begin to bear the family resemblance.

Philippians 4:8-9 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

You will be an artist of encouragement in no time!

In your Right Mind… Part 3… Training a Warrior!

Let me make this perfectly clear… For those of you under medical care to manage your mental health… I commend you! I also beg you to keep up your effort and follow your doctor’s orders. My opinions/experiences spoken on this web-site should only be taken alongside of, NOT INSTEAD OF, Health Care Professionals. You and I seek the same thing… mental health… but it is a journey not a destination, with many potential consultants/helpers along the way.

It is our Journey… Training Up our Command Center… in the way it should go.

Sounds like… Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Training up is the perfect picture of your role as the Commander… and child is the perfect picture of your Command Center. Like children, our mind can go from sweet wonderful playmate to tantrum throwing bully in less than a blink of the eye. From zero to 60 and back again in a breath. From adult like reason to childish manipulation. But eventually we all have to grow up (or at least get old).

The first principle in training up is… KNOW YOUR KID!

Some experts estimate that the average person has 48.6 thoughts per minute (according to the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging at University of Southern California) That’s a lot of thinking…

Have you ever just spent time monitoring your thoughts? Do you recognize those that seem to have more authority than the others? Have you ever investigated their origin and do you hear the tone and recognize the author? Have you found the tapes that just keep repeating under certain conditions?  Have you spent enough time in your Command Center to assess any necessary reorganization of command &/or reprogramming of truth versus relativity training that has taken root?

In order to do your assessment you have to know the Thinker of the thoughts.

Before you can know the Thinker of the thoughts, you have to hear the  thoughts… Before you can judge the effects of the thoughts, you have to KNOW the chosen direction of the Commander. You also have to know who he/she IS NOT…

You have to have an intimate relationship with YOU!

The second principle of Training Up is… Taking ownership

Just like we do with our children! Oh come on, admit it… You OWN your children! You can try to disown them but…  They contribute nothing to your fiscal health and would starve and be naked without your contributions to their fiscal health. Though you don’t control their every action you assume responsibility  (ownership) for their management… their value, their profit to their world and their debts.

Similarly, you cannot control the thoughts that come into your head but you are responsible for their management… their potential value, their profit and their debts.

An excellent way to manage is by taking prisoners! 2 Corinthians 10:5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ

Taking every thought captive… now THIS is mental health!

Once the thought is captive…  you set its course… its value to the body, its position of impact for maximum profit to your life, and the results of any debts (scars/wounds) it may incur if left to itself and given no supervision.

Not all deserve to be given position in our lives or stored for future use. Some thoughts are just not WORTH keeping! Unlike children, we can and should disown and trash those we see as causes of current or future trouble. And don’t forget… as I was reminded TODAY… “take out the trash OFTEN!”

Third Principle in Training Up… The Commander (you) set the Direction.

In setting the direction of our lives, we focus our efforts (both conscious & unconscious) so that our Command Center can order our lives with the intent to produce (cause) desired results (effects). Without focus we are left to wander, never quite reaching our unnamed and unmanaged expectations. Without intentional direction we let “unauthorized voices” map out our route.

We can install new tapes… We can authorize reliable voices to speak the truth in love… the reliable voice of God’s Word…

Romans 12:9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

Fourth Principle of Training Up… Take the journey

One thought… one word… one song at a time… Practice may not make perfect but practicing good things makes life better!

WARNING… this journey is not for sight-seeing or purely pleasure.

in fact sometimes it is downright ugly… We have an enemy… and he uses many weapons to destroy. Don’t become a his casualty of war… instead become a warrior.

Ephesians 6:10-18 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

We are not alone in this war… we have our God, Who does not wish for any to perish… So let’s keep on training our Command Center up in the way we should go, with God’s help as our Creator and Abba, even if it takes forever!

James 1:3-4 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

It may not always be a pretty journey, but it is ALWAYS a worthwhile journey!

In Your Right Mind… Part 2 Changing Your Mind

Last week I ENCOURAGED (hehe… ministry of…) you to take a tour of your Command Center…which is your mind. I also encouraged you NOT to do it alone because our mind can be the scariest place, especially if we haven’t noticed it’s condition lately.

This week I want to delve into who/what determines the mind’s condition, and how we can change our mind into a Right Mind simply by putting on our Commander’s wardrobe and taking up our role of the authority to command.

We’ve already established that YOU are the Commander. So what makes you the Commander you are today? What guides your choices either in action &/or reaction to the life you have today?

Some might call it your mind-set but I want to give it the honor of its position in each of our lives.

I want to call it our TREASURE… and Matthew 6:21 says “for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Therefor… we may as well call the heart of the Commander, the throne room, where he/she sits and views the treasures which he/she has determined are to be protected and valued and grown and multiplied in life. And where he/she informs the Command Center of the mandates to be followed in order to care for these treasures at all costs.

Are you screaming at me yet? “I HATE my life, I DO NOT “treasure” anything about it!!”

Our treasures may be covered up, or dressed to look like something more acceptable, or even invisible to our view… But…

They are there!

You are the Commander and you have set the mandates your Command Center is using based upon the “treasure” in your throne room

I am not judging!

I am only speaking the truth… in love… to everyone of us. Ephesians 4:14-15 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ.

When I act or react in anger and/or hate, there is a “treasure” I am protecting, valuing or growing. Maybe it’s my treasure of the pride that I take in being the best at something. Maybe it’s my treasure of fear that I “grow” when I worry and fret about being abandoned.

The same is true of positive reactions, when I enjoy a certain jewel, my actions will reflect an eagerness to continue “polishing and admiring” my treasure. Any reaction… positive or negative… is the result of our view of our treasures stored in our heart, our throne room. Our reactions are the results of our Command Center attempting to follow the mandates of it’s Commander.

Whether a treasure is hidden from you or you are in denial as to what the particular gemstone is, the treasure inspires the Commander to choose his/her mandate to the Command Center. The mandate’s purpose being to protect, value & grow ALL of our stored treasure!

There are three essentials that are required in a command wardrobe should a Commander desire to live in his/her Right Mind. Whether you believe as I do that God is the Highest General to each of the Commanders He has created and ONLY He can assure you of THE Right Mind, or you believe you independently rule yourself and can make that determination without God, these three essentials wardrobe elements are critical to a mind that is capable of living in the reality of this life.

Inspection… Confession… Training…

Inspecting… with honesty!

In “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas”, he says, “if I were honest with myself which I always try to be…”We need to be blatantly, bluntly, reality seeing, honest with ourselves first, so that we might not be hypocrites when asking others to do the same.

Honesty is NOT judgement… in other words I do not seek a description of ME because a particular treasure is found in my throne room. This is not a time of whipping myself or others for being… human.

This is a time to inspect and take inventory of the treasures found in my heart.

Confession…

Once you have knowledge of what is mandating the “lifestyle” of your command center, you then need to confess your claim to it (own it) or order removal of each treasure you no longer want to protect, value, grow or multiply.

Again… As with inspection… This is not a time of judgement… Should’ve… Would’ve… Could’ve (which are tools of guilt used by judges) are not useful in confessions of what you will or will not protect, value, grow or multiply…  Speak truth… Confess your command! Let your yes be yes and your no be no… OWN IT!

And then… Training…

Training your Command Center to let loose of the old mandates and recalibrate it’s ways for the changes to come. Training Up in the way you should go… Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it. Once again NOT with judgement… but with parental love of the Commander.

Why do I keep harping on NO JUDGING??

Some of us are so hell-bent on making ourselves road kill before we even take the journey, which I admit is a long, sometimes treacherous, sometimes overwhelming journey. But really… is it wise to make the journey impossible?

The rule of THIS journey to refurbish our Command Center, to change and come into our Right Mind is LOVE

the rule of Inspection… Confession… and Training is… LOVE!

Not the world’s brand of love…

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

This brand of love NEVER FAILS!!

Just so you know… this is not a quick trip to the Mind Market… You can’t “buy” the essential wardrobe to create with ease a great Command Center with all the latest bells & whistles… much less buy the love required to ring the bells and blow the whistles…

Inspection & Confession & Training are not one time events. All three require the diligence of the Commander to wear the wardrobe well, to be watchful and aware and quick to command. You are the Commander…

Will you take the authority given to you to live in your Right Mind?… A mind willing to face life with courage, knowing that you have the ability to think and plan and react with the wisdom and understanding of love.

With opportunity of peace with yourself, will you gladly receive the responsibility of free will to own this life with it’s challenges and imperfections, knowing that NO ONE can do your life better than you!

A Right Mind isn’t necessarily “right” all the time but a Right Mind doesn’t give up pursuing rightness while living with (and being at peace with) the one you are most dependent upon… your own.

After all, we are told and I heartily agree, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste!” So don’t…

From here we can begin searching for and learning to use well, the tools available to grow and maintain a not perfect Command Center, but one that is pleasant, useful, growing up, and becoming the one YOU need in order to live your life well.

But get ready… this could be war…

In your Right Mind… Part 1

Where does one start with encouragement? I would never want to discourage (hehe) anyone to “just do it” but… Proverbs 24:3-4 By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; And by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches… It seems to me that there may be better results if we seek wisdom, understanding & knowledge before “doing it”.

Whether you are the receiver or the giver (or both if you are practicing on yourself), the message of encouragement must

enter… flow through… and be assigned a response and action allowed.

It can all happen silently, violently, loudly or secretly. But it DOES happen!

And it all is the plan of our Creator God…

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

God created man different than all the other creatures. He made man in Their (Father, Son & Holy Spirit) image.

I don’t know all of the wondrous differences but the one that processes thoughts and words and actions is our mind… our brain (which will now be known for our purposes as the Command Center). Within this computer like body part, God placed the core of His greatest creation gift… free will. Humans were given the ability and the responsibility to choose… to take in information, to analyze or ignore it, assign it’s place of influence or rejection,  and then to respond through the body with the impact of such a process, by launching the chosen assignment.

I know, I know, it doesn’t f-e-e-l like there is much of a choice and it certainly isn’t free since for every action “there is an equal and opposite reaction” (Newton’s 3rd law)… there is cause and effect!

And what about those who can’t “think straight” due to medical challenges &/or birth defects. I know… it doesn’t look like a choice but within the abilities given each person there is the ability & responsibility to choose action(s) & reaction(s) to the life God has given.

And because God knows every one of us intimately… Psalm 139:15-16 My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.

He should be the ONLY ONE to judge whether or not an individual is operating in free will… Psalm 139:16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;

Ok, back to the Command Center. Since the advent of sin, we… it… has suffered damage. What we consider “unable” could be (and probably is) the results of abuse & abandonment from YEARS of being pummeled with messages of hate and threats of violence. The memories that surely belong in the furnaces of hell, are allowed to roam and effect not only our choice of actions and reactions but also to become the Authority for planning & ordering such actions and reactions.

We must journey into our Command Center and prepare to take back our ability and our responsibility. Before we can learn to use the tools we MUST take possession of the body that will be learning to use and using them.

We must be retrained in Commanding the Control Center.

It won’t be pretty nor easy… It won’t be “natural”… but if we don’t begin with us than what do we have to offer. And if we don’t begin… than who shall minister?

A great life-changing event for me, has been finding and living in “my right mind”! When I met Jesus, He and I took a walk through my Command Center, which houses who I am, what I do, and the storage of all the desires of my heart.

He showed me God’s document stating that since the creation of time I was fearfully and wonderfully made and known intimately by God as the OWNER of THIS (and only this) Command Center.

When I looked into Jesus’ eyes and saw how proud and excited He was to show me how much I and my Command Center were loved, I was…

Anxious to give it ALL to Him but He said no, love requires you to freely choose to love back.

I was ashamed at the destruction of the glory of God’s creation gift that I had allowed and participated in. I judged myself as unworthy and of no value to Jesus. But He said He was not there to judge but to save.

I was both astonished and appalled that He intended me to keep my ownership authority and “keep on keeping on” the life I have been given.

No doubt I had failed… many times. And WILL assuredly fail again but He expects me to GROW UP…

But not by myself…

Jesus does not shove me aside and say “He will do it Himself!” with an attitude of angry impatience for my bumbling attempts to live rightly…

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.

He takes me as a newborn babe (born-again) and cares for me, protects me, wrestles (and tickles & plays) with me, reads to me, talks with me, sings with me and shows me how I can take control and refurbish my Command Center…

Not alone… but with Him…

Luke 1:37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”

As I said… Life-changing…

Too much for one little blog!

But THIS is the ONLY place to start… Let Jesus walk with you through your Command Center… listen and learn from the Master – our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ!

Next Wednesday we will look at some of the tools available to use in ministry…

**All Scripture quoted comes from the “Bible Gateway” app and is the NASB      version of the Bible

Tend My Lambs…

John 21:15-17 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus *said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He *said to him, “Tend My lambs.”

I believe we are ALL called to ministry. But I also believe we’ve been scammed by our enemy to think we could never qualify or accomplish the task or be the one called to the work involved.

He *said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He *said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He *said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.”

Jesus asks… “Simon, son of John… (Mary… Jimmy… Joey… Nancy…) Do you love Me?”

He *said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.

“Simon, son of John… (your name goes here…) Do you love Me?”

Let the stuttering begin… our mouths can’t keep up with all the reasons why this can’t possibly directed at me.

“No No I can’t, but I will pray for the one you send…”

“Not me, but I’ll help you send the one who should go.”

“Surely someone else could do it better!”

To be sure, we have been duped. But… and I hate to be the bearer of bad news… we are wrong to think Jesus isn’t sending us!!

We have been lulled into lethargy with the idea that someone else will be sent, that as long as we are supporting those that go with prayer and finances we are excused from the work ministry. We are chosen to stay home and be about all the other business that “somebody” has to do!

WE don’t have time…

WE don’t have the skills…

WE don’t have the call…

WE don’t have the missionary desire…

But Jesus says… “Do you love Me?”…  Ummmm… How do YOU answer His question?

We have everything we need do what He asks us to do. The only question left is will we GO and DO?

Go Where? To the side of the one God brings before you.

Do what? Take their hand and walk our talk.

My friends there is no mystery to being God’s missionary in this life which is  full, pressed down, shaken and overflowing with opportunities to minister.

Jesus says, “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.” Matthew 25:40 NASB

Do you love Jesus? Let’s get going and doing…

P.S… and please… don’t forget to minister to… yourself!

SShh…

I have spent the last month and a half learning how to build and building this web-site. Because it has been planted in my heart by God, I would not presume to do this by myself even if I had the skills which I do not. So, I have also had the privilege the last month and a half to assume what I call “The Love Position” (the love position IS side by side AND hand in hand) with God’s Holy Spirit.

As He has outfitted me with construction armor… you know, the hard hat instead of my hard head… the tools of His Word, instead of my go-to hammer, my thoughts and ways, with which I choose to see everything as the nail that needs to be  pounded. He, the Holy Spirit, began to “train me up in the way I should go” wearing His love uniform and using His tools which are His ways and His thoughts.

As we began the training, I realized I didn’t REALLY know the destination (goal) of this web-site and therefore didn’t REALLY know how to pray for this journey.

Good thing I’m working with the Holy Spirit, huh…?…

(Romans 8:26-27 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.)

With the Holy Spirit’s interceding, I began to ask, “What is Your will, Lord God, for the destination, the goal of this web-site?”

And He said…

“The web-site is just a tool… I want SShh to become the destination of your heart and every heart I plant My seed of love in. I want SShh to grow to be the automatic response of your heart in your walk with Me and those I put on this path with you.

Not SShh, let’s keep secrets, but SShh, the calming song a parent sings to their child in the midst of pain, or grief, or trauma. The SShh rocking action that is made begins when love makes contact with need to the beat of the song of comfort.

(Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;)

I get it!! Your song… in our hearts… sung to each other Side by Side Hand in Hand!! The destination of this journey of love.

But Lord, what more shall I do?

How can I/we put the “u” in  B”u”y  In?

And He said…

“start by checking out The Architect…”

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

“And then by, looking at My construction plans…”

Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

“THIS is the TRUE bUy in!”
